Quest For The Perfect Kitchen Island!

I met with a wonderful couple earlier this week to discuss interior design within their current remodel. They had A LOT of questions for me!

In their kitchen they decided to go with a dark alder wood on their cabinets. BUT.... they had other ideas for their kitchen island. The wife asked me, "How do you think it would look if we went with a different cabinet on the island... like black?"

And I said I LOVE THE IDEA! I am all about having your kitchen island be your accent/statement/focal point of the room! Right now they are battling with an over sized fireplace with some outdated gold accents that is inevitably their main focal point of the entire room. No need to worry! That sleek and sophisticated BLACK kitchen island will take all the attention away from the dated fireplace!

When doing something like this, you have a few options. A. Choose a granite/counter top that makes the whole room flow. or B. Choose a granite/counter top for the kitchen island that is a night and day difference from the rest of the kitchen. REALLY make that island pop!

When choosing granite, we always like to tell people that a DARKER granite is going to be a little more durable. Especially in a high traffic kitchen. A darker granite is more solid therefor only needs to be resealed about every 3 years (depending on how hard you are on the counter top.) A lighter granite is going to be a little more high maintenance as it is more porous. You will want to reseal it every year. Some fabricators will now give you LIFETIME sealant for a fee with the granite purchase. So if you're in the market, make sure you ask the right questions!

If you don't want the upkeep of granite, you can always go with a Quartz counter top as it is less maintenance and more durable. HOWEVER, read the fine print! If you are looking to put hot pans on the counter right from the stove, USE A HOT PAD... and if you use your croc pot as much as I DO, lay a towel or hot pads under it!!! Quartz WILL discolor!!!!!!!
To go with Quartz you are looking at a price difference of about 25% higher than granite.

*THE BLACK KITCHEN ISLAND*

Know that you are not limited to JUST doing the island an accent color! You can even match your floor to ceiling cabinets, or even the range hood! (See Below) I  like this kitchen because they did a wood counter top that matched the kitchen cabinets! Very sleek and well thought out idea!

Not only do I LOVE the idea of matching the range hood to the island (especially when doing a black accent) but I love the idea of doing a sleek black counter top! (if you aren't afraid of some finger prints!!)

When doing a black accent, make sure you don't darken the room!! Do a light floor and neutral paint!

A grayish brown counter top is really going to make the room POP!

And if you are going to do lighting over the island, HAVE FUN WITH IT!

  1. I have been browsing on-line more than three hours lately, but I never found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It?s pretty value enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before. kitchen remodel
